Eiteljorg Sun Sail Project
About this Project
The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art is another place of history in Indianapolis. In order to provide the community a place of which to enjoy the canal and the gardens/sculptures of the Museum, the museum decided to build shade sails. Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf Architects would design the sun sails and provide Tway Lifting Products with the specifications to make the rigging equipment. Wilhelm Construction executed the design.
President John Vanausdall said, “We want to play a larger role in making the canal come alive.”
Tway Lifting Products produced the 1 1/8” drawn galvanized cable used to hang the sun sails from the massive wooden beams. The cables and hardware connected to it were built in-house and were load tested to 1.5 times the working load limit. The pull test came in at 36,000 lbs. The Cables ranged from 12’ to 70’. The museum wanted the 16 precision made spelter socket assemblies in 24 hours…Tway was able to make this happen.
